Two Types of Student Visas

F-1 (Student Visa). The F-1 visa is issued to students who are enrolled in a full-time academic or a language program. F-1 visa holding students are eligible to stay in the US for the entire period of their study program, plus an additional 60 days. F-1 students have to complete their studies within the expiration date as mentioned in their I-20 form.

J-1 (Exchange Visitor Visa). The J-1 visa is issued to students who require practical training in order to complete their academic program, and that practical training is unavailable in their home country. The student has to return to their home country upon completion of their studies. After staying for a minimum period of two years in their home country , the earlier J-1 visa holding student may become eligible to apply for an Immigrant (PR-Permanent Residence) visa.
