6.1 Chanakya Niti

श्रुत्वा धर्मं विजानाति श्रुत्वा त्यजति दुर्मतिम् ।
श्रुत्वा ज्ञानमवाप्नोति श्रुत्वा मोक्षमवाप्नुयात् ॥६.१॥

śrutvā dharmaṃ vijānāti śrutvā tyajati durmatim |
śrutvā jñānamavāpnoti śrutvā mokṣamavāpnuyāt ||6.1||

by Shruti, righteousness is understood; by Shruti, evil thoughts are discarded; by Shruti, knowledge is acquired; by Shruti, liberation from human bondage is attained

[Shruti is what is directly perceived. It is a direct perception by one or more of the numerous senses of the human body, of which the main nine ones are the senses of vision (sight), audition (hearing), gustation (taste), olfaction (smell), tactition (touch), thermoception (heat, cold), nociception (pain), equilibrioception (balance, gravity), and proprioception (body awareness). An example of Shruti is the Veda. Shruti gives birth to Smriti.

Smriti is what is indirectly perceived. It is an indirect perception produced by awakening the memory of the earlier experienced direct perception (Shruti). Thus, all Smriti have their roots in Shruti. An example of Smriti are all other religious scriptures. The verse implies that Shruti (Veda) is more important than Smriti (other religious scriptures.]

5.23 Chanakya Niti

राजपत्नी गुरोः पत्नी मित्रपत्नी तथैव च ।
पत्नीमाता स्वमाता च पञ्चैता मातरः स्मृताः ॥५.२३॥

rājapatnī guroḥ patnī mitrapatnī tathaiva ca |

5.22 Chanakya Niti

जनिता चोपनेता च यस्तु विद्यां प्रयच्छति ।
अन्नदाता भयत्राता पञ्चैते पितरः स्मृताः ॥५.२२॥

janitā copanetā ca yastu vidyāṃ prayaccati |
annadātā bhayatrātā pañcaite pitaraḥ smṛtāḥ ||5.22||

one who gave birth, one who girdles the sacred thread, one who teaches, one who provides food, and one who protects from fear, these five are your fathers, remember

5.21 Chanakya Niti

नराणां नापितो धूर्तः पक्षिणां चैव वायसः ।

5.20 Chanakya Niti

चला लक्ष्मीश्चलाः प्राणाश्चले जीवितमन्दिरे ।
चलाचले च संसारे धर्म एको हि निश्चलः ॥५.२०॥

calā lakṣmīścalāḥ prāṇāścale jīvitamandire |
calācale ca saṃsāre dharma eko hi niścalaḥ ||5.20||

moving is Lakshmi, and the moving Prana also moves from one alive temple to another, in this moving-unmoving world, Dharma alone is unmoving

[Lakshmi is goddess of wealth. Prana is the life-force. “alive temple” is an alive body of a life-form. Dharma is righteousness. The verse implies that in this world everything goes away including wealth and life. Only righteousness stays and does not go away.]

5.19 Chanakya Niti

सत्येन धार्यते पृथ्वी सत्येन तपते रविः ।
सत्येन वाति वायुश्च सर्वं सत्ये प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥५.१९॥

satyena dhāryate pṛthvī satyena tapate raviḥ |
satyena vāti vāyuśca sarvaṃ satye pratiṣṭhitam ||5.19||

truth supports the earth, truth heats the sun, truth blows the wind, everything on truth is established

5.18 Chanakya Niti

अधना धनमिच्छन्ति वाचं चैव चतुष्पदाः ।
मानवाः स्वर्गमिच्छन्ति मोक्षमिच्छन्ति देवताः ॥५.१८॥

adhanā dhanamiccanti vācaṃ caiva catuṣpadāḥ |
mānavāḥ svargamiccanti mokṣamiccanti devatāḥ ||5.18||

the poor desire wealth, the four-footed desire speech, humans desire heaven, and the gods desire liberation

[gods are always young, and they enjoy all the heavenly pleasures in the prime of their youth. Yet, eternal youth and heavenly pleasures are also bondages. Thus, even gods desire liberation.]
