GRE is an acronym for the Graduate Record Examinations. GRE is a standardized test that is an admissions requirement for most graduate schools in the United States. The GRE is owned and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). The test examines analytical writing, quantitative reasoning and verbal reasoning.
The purpose of the test is admissions to Master or Doctoral degree programs in various universities. Fluency in English is assumed.
The duration of the test is about 3 hours and 45 minutes (includes 1-minute breaks after each section and a 10-minute break after third section).
The scoring pattern is as follows:
Analytical writing: 0.0 to 6.0 (in 0.5 point increments)
Verbal reasoning: 130 to 170 (in 1 point increments)
Quantitative reasoning: 130 to 170 (in 1 point increments)
The score is valid for 5 years.
The test is delivered as computer-based or paper-based. Computer-based test is offered multiple times a year, depending on availability of the test center. It can be taken only once after 21 days from the day of exam in every year. Maximum of 5 times a year. The paper-based test can be taken as often as it is offered. Paper-based test is offered up to 3 times a year in October, November and February.
The test can be taken at about 1,000 test centers in more than 160 countries. Paper-based test is offered only in areas where computer-based testing is not available. For further details: www.ets.org/gre
